To put images onto a blank plastic ID card, most ID badge printers use either dye sublimation or thermal transfer printing. Both processes use a thermal printhead to heat an ID card printer ribbon. Printheads used during the thermal transfer process heat (and melt) ink, while printheads used during dye sublimation printing heat (and vaporize) dye.

Magnetic Stripe Encoding
Note from the table below that magnetic stripe readers used for acquiring credit card data need only to read tracks 1 or 2 from the card. Note also the redundancy. Lower-density data recorded on track 2 contains only the account number and expiration date. Track 1 contains the customer's name in addition to the account number and expiration date recorded at higher density.

The scratch-off panel is the unique easy-to-remove coating most commonly applied on phone, internet or pre-paid cards used to conceal symbols, numbers or codes, serial or pin numbers for instance, to access a service. When this coating is “scratched off”, it reveals serial or pin numbers to access a service or even win prizes as with promotional cards, coupons, discounts for advertising or sales promotional purposes.
